| 7/30 to 8/9/19 We headed out west to Colorado, then Nevada and Idaho. After having fun with family members, we made for the mountains, prairies, and canyons. Two goal birds were the Himalayan Snowcock (We photographed as a speck miles away) and the Cassia Crossbill (We caught them rather high in the trees). Along the way, we saw many other birds, meteor showers, and amazing wild flowers. CLICK on NEXT PAGE below to go back in time. |
| 8/5 and 8/6/2019 Pahranagat NWR, NV and birding along the way to Ruby Valley, NV: Golden Eagle (We saw 6 in two hours.), Sage Thrasher , Yellow Warbler , Warbling Vireo , Swainson's Hawk (dark and light morph), Spotted Sandpiper , Western Kingbird family, Red-tailed Hawk (and juv. or poss juv. SWHA), Brewer's Sparrow , Ash-throated Flycatcher , Lesser Goldfinch , juvenile Northern Mockingbird , and a rather sneaky Lazuli Bunting with food for his young. |
| 8/5 and 8/6/2019 Pahranagat NWR, Ruby Valley, and Island Lake, NV: The BIG star of the show was a tiny speck sighting of a Himalayan Snowcock. We got up at 2am and started off on the hike with lamps. The Perseid Meteor Shower was fantastic!!! We made it up to the lake before dawn and set up the scope and camera. We started checking the cliffs. Other birders started showing up and one fellow spotted one fly in. We saw three specks in all. Also: Prairie Falcon and White-crowned Sparrow. We considered the White-lined Hummingbird Hawk Moth an honorary bird with its roving eye - so cool. And we have never seen a mountain trail so smothered in wild flowers - it was an amazing day! |
