11/8-11/2012 A trip to Xi'an, China.  Xian is the ancient cradle of civilization in China.  Prehistoric
excavations are taking place alongside dynasty digs dating over 5,000 years ago.  Many tombs of various
emperors (including that of the first emperor) are situated in the area as well as the famous Army of
Terra Cotta Warriors.  We also did some hiking at Hua Shan, a sacred Taoist Mountain, (ouch on the
knees and calf muscles!) where steps and ladders have been carved in the rock.  Xian itself is quite
modern, had a wonderful park devoted to China's poets, bore the remnants of a medieval wall, and had a
fantastic museum.  We took in a dinner show about the Tang dynasty that was fun.
11/8-11/2012 Xi'an, China:  Hua Shan - an absolutely beautiful mountain!  One can take a cable car up part
of the way after taking a bus ride through a wonderful canyon.  Temples dot the cliffs.  The crowds grew
rapidly as the morning wore on!  The red strips are prayers attached by locks to the chains.
11/8-11/2012 Xi'an, China:  Tang Paradise Park - A well done tribute to China's poets - and other sights
around Xi'an, including the show at the Lido Grand Theater.
11/8-11/2012 Xi'an, China:  The Terra Cotta Warriors of the first emperor were a real treat to see and the
various museums were very well done with English explanations at each of the three excavation pits.
11/8-11/2012 Xi'an, China:  Yangling Mausoleum of the Han Museum - much smaller figures in a
completely different style, focusing on everyday life.
