9/3 thru 9/22/2015    We flew into San Francisco, CA and, after visiting with family, traveled up the coast to
Crescent City, CA near the Oregon border.  While we birded mostly on the coast, we did venture inland
to such places as Pinnacles National Park and the amazing redwood forests found in northern California.
One great day was spent on a pelagic trip with Shearwater Journeys (Thanks Debi and all!) watching
whales and seeing tons of birds, many of which we don't get to see on the East Coast.
9/13/15  Mendocino, CA:  The Botanical Gardens were just gorgeous.   What is better than fantastic
flowers?  Anna's Hummingbirds feeding at those flowers.  Unfortunately we only had a morning and there
wasn't much light, but we certainly had fun with the little guys.  Also: American Goldfinch and an odd-billed
yellow-vented vireo or Western Tanager perhaps?  (Any feedback would be appreciated - thanks!)
9/15/15  Willow Creek, CA:  We kept an eye out for Big Foot while searching the surrounding mountains for
Mountain Quail.  We did see the MOQU but did not get a pic.  A female Anna's Hummingbird came to drink
nectar, but berries were on the menu for most of the other birds we saw:   Band-tailed Pigeon ,
Golden-crowned Sparrow , Red-breasted Nuthatch , Purple Finch , Fox Sparrow , Wilson's Warbler ,
American Goldfinch , Warbling Vireo , and Western Tanager .
9/14/15  Mendocino, CA:  Shown here: Western Sandpiper flock, Greater Yellowlegs , Green-winged Teal ,
White-tailed Kite , Dunlin , Peregrine Falcon (two were causing a ruckus), and Marsh Wren .
