5/30/2013-6/2/13 Okinawa, Japan:  Okinawa is a beautiful island with some unique birds and it was great to
see the locals protective of their endemics.  We expected a crowd at Tanaga-Grumai Waterfall but it was
a deserted little spot with a vague, slippery trail that ended in paradise! The beaches and coastline were
exotic and empty.  Little streams with butterflies greeted us as we wandered through the mountains of
North Okinawa. We birded around Fukugawa Dam and the surrounding areas, and also headed to Point
Hedo with the Dai Sekirinzan Park's  rock formations. Finally, we took in the beautiful Hiji Falls which was
well worth the climb!
6/8-13/13 Hokkaido, Japan:  Sounkyo Gorge with its fabulous waterfalls was our first stop.  After hiking the
streams and mountains, we made our way to Shiretoke peninsula and visited more falls while birding. A
brand new fawn being cleaned by its mother was adorable. From Rausu, we took a nature cruise out past
the point.  We were able to see thousands of shearwaters and a pod of Orcas with young.  We drove back
via the midlands where we were treated to a Blakiston's Fish Owl feeding at our hotel stream.  Then it was
back towards Sapporo with a stops at Kushiro Marsh Observatory and Lake Utonai and it's wildlife reserve!
