12/20/2013 to 1/3/14 Darwin, Australia and environs:  An exciting trip of a lifetime for us took us birding to
Darwin and the Northern Territory outback.  It was hot (42 or about 105) and the wet season (meaning
roads could flood up to 2 meters quickly) with a few bugs (we had 100 2 inch termites in our cabin one
night and swarms of flies to contend with) but it was awesome!  We were in a 4WD and took in the wild
and fantastic scenery that ranged from scrub desert to tropical rainforest (yes, with skeeters and
leeches) while taking in all the national parks in the area.  We drove from Darwin towards Kakadu NP (we
stayed in the Crocodile Hotel) , then south to Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk National Park) and beyond to
Mataranka Thermal Pools. Then we headed back to Darwin through Litchfield National Park and were able
to see its wonderful waterfalls.  Back in Darwin, we headed to Doctor's Gully and Gunn Point.  For
Scenery, click on NEXT PAGE below.
Some of the animals we saw along the way will be posted here as we go through the trip photos. We saw
wallabies, dingos , turtles, giant bats, and lizards.  A Native cave painting is also shown ( a figure with
birds).  These paintings often indicated what kind of food could be found in the area for others passing
through.  We also took butterflies at the butterfly garden at Singapore Airport.
